“If you don’t build it, they won’t come.”

This week’s quote comes from an event I recently attended at Butcher Bird Studios titled “How LIVE STREAMING Changes the Media Landscape.”

The event was for members of the Interactive Media Peer Group of the Television Academy. It included a panel discussion that covered a lot of topics and dropped a lot of truth bombs from the panelist. It focused on narrative storytelling and community engagement during live streamed projects. with questions like:

  • Why live?
  • What are the challenges of a live workflow?
  • What are the technological challenges of live audience engagement?
  • How do you deal with audience fatigue?
  • Is there a business model that works?

This week’s quote was from the end of the discussion and came from John FK Parentaue of Blackmagic Design. It was part of his response to a question about the business model of live streaming.

We’ve all heard similar quotes aimed at encouraging people to “just do it” as Nike says. From, “If you don’t swing you’ll never hit a home run” to “You miss all of the chances you don’t take” this mantra is something that is hammered into most of us from a young age.

Fear is real and can definitely hold us back. Without taking chances we’ll never really know what could be.

Here are a few other truth bombs that were dropped during the discussion, which of course was live streamed to Facebook:

  • “There’s a difference between interactivity and community.” – Michael W. Shaw (Nerdist)
  • “In order to build the audience, it has to be repeatable.” – Michael W. Shaw (Nerdist)
  • “Fan fiction [can] become the fiction.”
  • “The only thing you get in live for free is continuity.” – Steven Calcote (Writer/Director of Orbital Redux)
  • “The reward of good content is having good content.” – Lillian Diaz-Przybyl (EP of Orbital Redux)
